ponies everywhere

This is bloggish! But it all has to do with art, culture and my future career – hopefully :3

Wednesday; went to the critique session at Animwork to get some good advice for improving my art. I made a lot of notes;
- some long studies for life drawing in addition to the 1-5 minute gesture work.
- also show them muscles in character designs, push for details. And no lazy lines.
- base stuff slightly more in reality. Anatomy was there, but something with.. design inspiration, I am not sure. Researching before drawing!
- something DIFFERENT for backgrounds. Yeah that’s just going to be hard work and practise. Maybe some happy mood backgrounds. Not as tight as a lined drawing, not as loose as my painted ones.
- more genres on characters especially, not just sci fi and fantasy. So, everyday, horror, detective, and whatnot. They were happy enough with my character design variation in itself.
- don’t get involved in drama on dA 2 weeks before deadline so you can’t concentrate. No, I just added that.

But really I just want to get started with more time to go on, and that’s why I’ve given my website a serious overhaul, it’s a great portfolio tool. Once things are put up I can see what I need to do, really.

Sometimes I get irritated with Animwork because they can be unresponsive (when they are busy?), and obviously because I don’t get in, but every time I go there I just become SO HAPPY from seeing the stuff they make, meeting the students, meeting the hopefuls like myself. Great people!
-
Thursday and Friday; M found some good companies I could apply for – something I hadn’t thought to search in; architectural visualization (for some silly reason it’s catalogued under multimedia animation, don’t ask me why), so I worked to make a 3D portfolio, she called them to ask if they could take an intern, yes, so we worked to make some applications.

AND the big news – about an hour after I sent that, one of them called – so I have an interview tomorrow for an internship! So hopefully I get to get LOTS of 3D experience in the next couple of months, learn a thing or two about environments and pretty rendering. And maybe we’ll do some CRAZY things.
-
Friday evening I went with my family to see a play of Sweeney Todd at the theatre. It was very fun and captivating. Made some doodles of the actors, that I forgot to scan!
-
Saturday I had a barbecue with some of the girls from my art course last year. Very nice to see them again!
-
Sunday, today; I’ve always wanted to make a 3D pony, so I took the time to photograph one of mine and made this;
Sweetheart Sister Pony
It’s not a “friendship is magic” style one – I like those, but I still prefer the good ol’ stuff, and a lot of people are making FiM ponies at the moment. In fact a lot of other people are choking on ponies by now, hahaha. I even caught some flak for making them. (You can watch Friendship is Magic on pensivepony’s youtube.)

And with that, I’ll hit the bed, got a long and exciting day tomorrow, with creative workshops and the interview :3

Artist Trading Cards

Spent a lovely thursday with Moosecastle who, after making beads, beads, beads! got into making artist trading cards and trading them with people. Well, I didn’t find anyone to trade with first, I just made ‘em!

Bigger Fish
Café Café
City City
Equinox
Frosty
Joe
Unnamed / Orange
Zebra

Scanners aren’t very good at metallics, BUT I ALMOST also feel like recreating simple specularity effects like Bigger Fish in 3D ;D I am thinking I’ll trade them for original cards made by YOU GUYS.

In other news, I really feel like buying some My Little Ponies.

Character: Tia

Tia is a roleplaying character from ~2002. First edition was a pure warrior, a later remake was cross classed to rogue, as a more burly character entered the team. She was actually a rather odd warrior any way, too much intelligence. And too much little elf?

She was a moon elf by the D&D 3.0 system. I don’t remember the other characters that much… the first campaign had a wizard.. who somehow managed to father a centaur kid (at our second group). I don’t remember what my BF at the time played, Cleric? I remember our DM was a pothead and dropped out of the school (HTX).

About the art, sadly the first 2 are traced from other artwork to use as a base doll. I think at the time, conveying the design was more important to me than proper drawing, so when I saw something cool, I borrowed it. So I learned a ton about design and trained my motor skills too. I drew on my own as well, but in retrospect not a lot happens with my anatomy skill between 2000 and 2005 where I had completely stopped tracing. And then for a while nothing new happened either, I was firmly in the other ditch and avoided reference altogether. I just realized this is a tangent.

I will be honest with you all, I am a terrible role player, and Tia has no personality at all.

Character: Thomas

Name: Thomas, Thomas Lindenaan

Iastren elf, age mid twenties. Golden brown skin, light brown or golden eyes (elf has green centre), blonde, short afro hair (dyed). Skinny body with distinctive shoulders and long neck.

Some mostly 2007-08 artwork (images framed in red are not safe for work);

There are (at least) 2 versions of Thomas, the first was an elf designed as Zinnober’s lover, however as the Zinnober concept moved onto later iterations Thomas became unused. There is also a human version, dating the character SEB. (Despite being an androgyne, the elven version has always been denoted by “he”, it doesn’t refer to an actual gender). By this time there were already about 2 versions of Thomas – the original elf gradually evolved to another one.

a blog for putting thoughts into

Oh hello!

Expected contents to come:
- sketchblogging
- character descriptions, especially unfinished idea collections. These posts will probably be edited continuously.
- same for other ideas, I’ll put the thoughts down before they dissolve.
If there is a topic you’d like to see me cover, shoot me an email.

Better layout? MAYBE. Allowing comments? NO. For a couple of reasons – you all can already comment on FA/dA etc., second, to eliminate fuss, and last – I want to try what it feels like to post and NOT wait up for a reply; F5 F5 F5.

Speaking of characters – how many posts will there be of that? Well, let me copypaste…

Whew! That’s 45, and I KNOW I forgot some. Some will be merged or excluded though. This is everything ranging from people living on our regular Earth (though sometimes with small changes), humans living elsewhere in the universe along with the local intelligent bipeds, to D&D characters. Some of these characters are done so long ago there’s really nothing on them by now, so they’re likely to be excluded.
